Mt. Kailash (6,638 m/ 21,778 ft) is the most sacred mountain in Asia making it an ultimate pilgrimage destination. It is believed to be the physical embodiment of the mythical Mt Meru, which is said to be the center of the universe or ‘navel of the world’. Mt. Kailash is revered sacred by people of mainly 4 religions; to Hindus, Kailash is the abode of Shiva and nearby Manasarobar Lake is the means or soul of Brahma. Tibetans call Kailas Kang Rimpoche meaning; ‘Precious Snow Mountain. Jains worship it as Mt Ashtapada, the peak from which the religion’s founder, Rishabanatha, achieved spiritual liberation. Followers of Bon-Po, the ancient pre- Buddhist shamanistic religion of Tibet, refer it as the soul of Tibet. The Kailash circuit is an approximate of 55 kms which is completed in 3 days.

Day 1
Day1: Arrival in Kathmandu 4,383 feet / 1,336 meters

Representative from EWT will receive you at the airport and take you to the hotel.

Day 2
Day 2: Sightseeing in Kathmandu

We will visit a UNESCO Heritage site; Boudhanath Stupa, which lies approximately 6 km north east from central Kathmandu, which was probably built in the 14th century. Located at the valley floor, Boudhanath Stupa is considered a jewel point in the center of a natural mandala, a store of sacred energy. Today it remains an important place of pilgrimage and meditation for Tibetan Buddhists and local Nepalis, as well as a popular tourist site. The site was damaged in the 2015 earthquake. Thanks to the united efforts of the community, it has been restored to its full glory. We will have lunch at one of the restaurants overlooking the scenic stupa site.

In the afternoon we will visit the Pashupatinath Temple, also a UNESCO Heritage site. It is a famous and sacred Hindu temple located on the banks of the Bagmati River. Non Hindus are restricted from entering the main temple and so will be going around the cremation spot. You can see the richly ornamented pagoda house with the sacred linga or holy symbol of Lord Shiva.

In the evening pack and get ready for the trek tomorrow. Pack a bag you need for the trek and you can leave the rest at the hotel/ EWT office.

Visit Potala Palace and Johkang temple and walk around the famous Barkor Street

Day 5: Lhasa

Visit Drepung and Sera monastery.

Day 6
Day 6: Lhasa- Gyantse

Visit Yamdrok Lake and Palkor monastery.

Day 7
Day 7: Gyantse-Shigatse

Visit Tashilunpo monastery in Shigatse

Day 8
Day 8: Shigatse-Latse

Day 9
Day 9: Latse-Saga 4,600 m

This is the last town on this route.

Day 10: Saga-Paryang

Today’s drive (260km) will take us to Paryang in the heart of western Tibet, where the four great rivers of South Asia diverge from their glacial sources around Mount Kailash. During the rainy season, the roads to Paryang are likely to be washed out by floods.

Day 11: Paryang-Darchen 4,575 m

Darchen is the starting and completion point for the general circuit of the sacred mountain.

Day 14: : Lake Manasarovar

We will stay overnight at this sacred lake. We will take a walk up to the Chiu Monastery, located atop a cliff, to enjoy the spectacular view of the lake.

Day 15
Day 15: Darchen-Tsada

The road to Thsada is terrible, and go over some very high passes, taking a whole day.We will spend a day driving to Zhanda, a small town situated deep in a valley. The drive itself offers a breathtaking view of sand-rock formations shaping the deep valley. We will spend another day in the area to visit the ruins of the Guge Kingdom, which ruled western Tibet 300 years ago.

We will return to Lhasa by retracing the original route we took, stopping on the way to play frisbee in the grasslands with Tibetan children or photographing golden haired yaks grazing in the sunset
